Probably better if you can hang from a bearer. But assuming 8ft floor to bearer, you will need a decent length of suspension to get any sort of layable hang. If you get what I mean.
Joists will take the shear load, not a problem. Just need a sufficient eye into the joist.
Yep, I do it. My suggestions: Use "old" cantilever rule, make sure your eye is at least half way or more from the bottom edge. I use large fender washers to help distribute stress from the core (both sides), magnum eye bolt (not screw) and I would be surprised if you are a bigger bear than me. Works great, and yes I do have them 20 feet apart to get the ridge out as previously suggested.
If it moves, you can eat it. No promises you will think it tastes good.
i too am doing this, and found out that hanging chain from the floor joists allows you to get the lower hang with less room, i have about 12 feet of space, and can hang that way, you hang the chain from the joists then a bar between the chains for a ridgeline. it seams to work well.
I drilled a 1/2" hole through the joist in the center. Strung amsteel through it and hung from that. Didn't want to torque the joist with an eye bolt on one side. I also stayed on the same joist if that makes sense. I needed all 22' of my basement with 8' ceiling. I didnt use a solid ridge pole though.
Good luck
Jason
