Cottonwood Lakes, High Sierras

August 6-9

Basecamp at Cottonwood Lakes trail head. We stayed there the first day to get acclimated to the elevation. They made fun of me for bringing a hammock. As you can see a couple of them used it to take a nap!! They changed thier minds, said it was really comfortable.

Wish I could have taken up to the lakes but we were going above the treeline. Had to use a tent and sleeping bag.

That is me in the third pic. One thing I realized is that I need a bottom quilt. It got down to about 30 degrees at night and I used a blanket on top but that cold came right thru the bottom of the hammock.

Time to research quilts.

Be sure to take long suspension up there - sometimes all you have a big trees! I love the high Sierras. Glad you got to go recently and thanks for the pictures.

Amen to the big trees But I spend 8 nights between Reds Meadow to Yosemite Valley with not a single problem finding a hanging spot. I think the ground dwellers I was with had a harder time
Under quilt or pad is a must! I've been to the Sierras the last 3 yrs Beautiful place

Your welcome, I have 20' 1" webbing for each end of the hammock. Glad I decided to go with the longer suspension. I need to thank this forum for that advice.

Yea, I was not used to sleeping on the ground. All I could do was look down the mountain and see the trees. It was beautiful, and want to go back. Next time maybe will camp at one of the lower lakes where there are some trees. Probably will one of the guys got altitude sickness.

Wow haven't been there since 1987. We camped just below the small lakes before you go up New Army pass. That was a fun trip all the way up and over Whitney.

I've never been to Mt. Langley but it's on the to-do list. Been up Whitney and most of the East side routes. Next month I'm trying the West side for four days in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness.

I ordered a Crowsnest and look forward to getting off the ground myself.

Now that you're a "Hanger", it totally changes your perspective doesn't it.
