    DIY Hammock Fabric Choice?

I'm looking to make my first hammock and need to know what fabric to use for my weight. I weigh 235 and want to make sure I have enough factor of safety. I'd rather add a few more ounces than worry about failure when in the backcountry. I use an underquilt and would prefer to make a single layer hammock if possible. What do all you DIYers recommend? Is a single layer of 1.9 ripstop enough? I currently have an Eno Double nest which is 70d Taffeta. What's the ripstop equivalent?

So, either a heavier fabric or a double layer? Is there a correlation between weight per yard and denier? Obviously the heavier the fabric the higher the denier, but is there a starting point? What denier would 1.1 ripstop be? 30D?

You should be fine with a 1.9 SL

The 1.1 you'll find will either be 20D or 30D. As a quick comparison, the 20D will be softer to the touch, higher tenacity, yet slightly less abrasion resistant than 30D. If you do a DL, check out Xtrekker's tutorial:

I weigh about the same as you and currently use a diy sl 1.1 with fabric from ripstopbytheroll. I've had no issues and the hammock is very comfortable. However if you are looking for longevity Dutch just got some argon 1.6oz ripstop that should be fantastic, diy gear supply usually has a great selection of different weights and types of hammock fabrics and ripstopbytheroll has a great colour selection of 1.1 and 1.9oz ripstop. anything heavier than 1.1 and good quality fabric should be fine

Thanks guys, I over built a bit and went with a 2.6 oz. nylon. It is real nice. Obviously not the lightest hammock but super comfortable. image.jpgimage.jpg
