    Backpacking vs. Car Camping

Most of the time when I’m hanging it’s during a backpacking trip, so my gear is lightweight and very packable.

But when going car camping, I can obviously bring whatever I want – heavy fleece blankets, synthetic insulation, closet full of clothing, etc...but I have a hard time doing this!! Even just a few extra pieces of gear. I guess I’ve just built up a lightweight mentality from backpacking, trying to shed ounces whenever possible. And I think it may have to do with making sure my backpacking system "still works", an ongoing test, so I don’t “lose my touch” and so on.

I’m just curious - does anyone else find themselves in this predicament when packing for a car camping trip?

There was a similar thread to this last month here. You might find that helpful. I suspect many of the answers apply to both threads.

*raises hand* I do, I do! If I am going car camping, but not taking the family with me, that happens to me all the time. I don't usually find myself missing not having anything other than a good chair to sit around the fire in, but what I really get mad at myself for not bringing is some REALLY good food and a grill to cook it on! I have to make myself pack the "extras", they just don't feel natural to pack anymore.

More often than knot I car camp with my wife so my mentality changes from weight to comfort. Even when I car camp alone or with other hangers I actually like taking some of my heavier gear that's fun to play with.

    Always light

I can't seem to throw anything else in the car than my backpack. Even when i take my boys (9 & 3) I try to fit everything they will need in our backpacks. I try to fit most of the 3 yr olds stuff in my pack. The one thing he won't let me carry is his hammock, he has to carry that himself. Ah the addiction to the hammock starts young.....

    It depends.

If I'm going with the wife, then we bring all of the stuff that she needs to make her comfortable out in the woods--the four-man tent, the double-burner propane stove, the portable fans, the air mattress, etc., etc., etc.

If I'm going by myself, then I just pack what I'd normally bring on a backpacking trip plus a chair, larger containers of sunscreen and bug spray, and occasionally a bit of firewood (depending on temperature).

I can't believe all the stuff people put in their cars for camping.

    Two totally distinct scenarios.

    Backpacking is real camping.

    Car camping is drinking outside.

I love them both, but the gear lists are drastically different. I tend to see how far I can take each in their different directions.

    Extra Gear

The only extra things I tend bring when car camping is either activity specific, or in the cooking arena. I don't usually eat dehydrated food when car camping, so I might bring a heavier stove and more then a singe small pot, as well as a separate cup to drink from etc etc.
