    Rev,

Here is a picture of my two tarps. The closer one is ACU and the rear one is a woodland poly tarp.

The woodland poly tarp is used by my daughter and is much more aesthetically pleasing than the blue-kelly green poly tarp I have. The ACU is a DIY tarp that I selected so that it wouldn't stand out as much.

I have been thinking along those lines also; here the Mossy Oak brand Brushy pattern fits in well, but the guy I contacted said you have to have a license from Mossy Oak to buy their fabric by the yard. I am also querying the same guy in regards to the A-TACS camo pattern: http://www.a-tacs.com/about/

If I get a line on some 70D Nylon Ripstop, which I am looking to get for a single layer backpacking hammock and tarp, I will let you know.

Incidentally, I made all my current gear out of ACU 1.1 ripstop where I got a large roll of 68" from MagnaFabrics.

That is really cool camo fabric. What is it called and where did you order it from?

This is also just as true with the human body, again, because the brain is programed to "see" that "human pattern" under any circumstance -

Basically this all boils down to one thing, to effectively hide in any area you will need to use several different tactics and have environmentally neutral colors for each environment you find yourself in. Position, location and environmentally neutral projections (color, lighting and shading) are all necessary and important.

But simply put, large objects hide better behind solid colors
This is all true.... but, then there is this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTv4y...yer_detailpage (I spend too much time on youtube)
I guess it depends on who is looking and for what...

Anyway, not too surprised by this. The ACU pattern suffers from the same issue that plain khaki and light grey uniforms do: they reflect too much of their surroundings' shades. Which is great when viewed from an angle that gets the light from the ground...not so much the light from the sky. Meh...guess that's what a "one size fits all" pattern gets you. Still and all, it was the first pattern that the Army had that would help confuse night vision devices. So, I guess it could be considered a step forward there...

Big fan of the CADPAT, actually. Wish someone would make 1.1 to 1.9 oz nylon out of it... Suppose it's a good thing that nobody does. We just don't get enough dark green down here in FL for it to work well. Too much brown mixed in...and the plants don't need that much chlorophyll most places (outside of deep swamps) to actually photosynthesize the subtropical sun.
The $5MM number was the cost just to develop the pattern.
