quilts are are a waste,the claytor dont need a quilt.i have been down to 8 degrees with a 3/8 in army closed cell pad i paid $3.00 bucks for for added isulation i layer it with a $3.00 wind shield reflectorneo

What pad did you get for $3 that could go down to 8 deg? Where did you get it. I have trouble with a 3/8" pad below 40 deg. I always have to double up. However, I don't have a wind shield reflector; what exactly is that anyways?

What $3 wind shield did you get? I would be interested in possibly getting/making one.

a closed cell milatary pad at an army surplus store it is 25 inches wide and 3/8 inches thick cut down to 60 inches in length,windshield reflestor are light and cheap and 2 to 6 bucks at walmart in the automotive section,thats all i use in the summer time in my claytor jungleneo

Oh, and actual winshield reflector for a car. I was thinking it was some special thing you made for the hammock, like the JRB weather shield.

Is the pad any different than the blue CCF pads from REI.com? Don't you use a SPE too?

Isn't the windshield thing, noisy, thick, heavy and bulky to pack?

Do you put the windshield reflector on top of the pad, or on the bottom?

I'm with you Neo on the Army Surplus pad. Mine gets me down well under 45F with a good sleeping bag. But tell us more about the $3.00 wind shield reflector?

I use inexpensive pads for hammocks that my kids use.

My hammock? ...a SuperShelter and a MacKAQ nested underquilt!

I don't think it is CCF.

I found this one but it doesn't say what thickness it is. The pictures look to be the same. They do say the one I am linking to is closed cell

I sent an email to them asking the thickness and got a reply back that it was 2-3" thick!!!! I replied back and asked them to recheck. They came back and said oh sorry. It is no more than 3/4" thick. I still believe it is 1/4 to 3/8" thick.

In my early hammock days I took a cheap walmart synthetic bag (used as a pea pod) and mylar covered bubble wrap wind shield reflector (pad) to the high 30's. Stayed very warm!

Every time I read about the inexpensive materials people have used to keep warm in hammocks, it makes me think of the homeless people I used to see on the streets of Philadelphia back in the 80s.

Especially the Garlington Insulator.
