Just in the interest of differing opinions, I'm one of the "narrow hammock" guys. My current one is 50" (before hemming) and whipped with Jeff's "W-whipping." It's plenty comfortable for me. I find that in the winter I don't want to move around that much anyway, in the interest of minimizing my body's surface area and staying warmer. I've made a 60" wide one too, which I'll probably use for the summer when I want to spread out more and don't have to carry insulation. My narrow one is a few ounces lighter than my wide one, so it's worth it to me in the winter when I DO have the added insulation weight.Originally Posted by Hooch

BB, I don't do much cold weather camping, but I was thinking along the same lines as you. Make a wider hammock for my comfort level and then if I'm dissatisfied, I can cut and hem it to a narrower width. We'll just have to see how it goes.

Sil isn't the best material for a hammock but it's great for skins, stuffsacks, etc.
Get some 1.9oz DWR if you want to make a hammock (and you will, soon).

In addition to what slowhike said, let me throw this out at you.
DWR is water repellant and downproof, what you see on sleeping bags and quilts.
Sil is waterproof, what you see on tarps and tents.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?
