    Supershelter test at Ohio Hang

I had the chance to test the limits of the HH Supershelter at this weekend's Ohio Hang at Wildcat Hollow.

    Temps from my phone: 31 degrees @ 10:30pm, 25 degrees @ 6:30am
Low temp according to wunderground.com was 20 degrees.

    Hammock: HH Explorer Deluxe
Supershelter: undercover, overcover, foam pad, mylar emergency blanket
Sleeping Bag: 20 degree synthetic bag (el cheapo from a yard sale)
Clothing: wool base layer, my regular hiking clothes, fleece jacket, balaclava, rain shell
Extras: 2 Hot Hands hand warmers

Results: While I wasn't especially toasty or even comfortably warm, I stayed warm enough to sleep through the night. No cold spots that I could detect. When I got up to water the bushes early this morning, I could tell a big difference between the temperature inside the hammock and the outside temperature.

Conclusion: I'll definitely use this system for temperatures down to, say 30-35ish and it should do the job quite well. It's also comforting to know that I can take down as low as 20-25 if I need to.

    Thanks for listening.

So somewhere between 20 and 25F? Well, I have always felt it was just adequate for me- with just the one pad/SB - to about freezing, and even better on up in the 30s. So looks like you are actually doing a bit better than I ever did ( or better than Tom H. per info at his web site). So, pretty darn good really. Any time I have expected to be below 30, I have always planned on adding either the kidney/torso pads, or a jacket(s) or Garlington insulator or something thrown down in the UC. I did a plenty warm enough 14.8( wind chill 6, and no tarp or over cover) with UC, main pad, kidney/torso pad/SB plus one pretty thick fleece jacket and one 9 oz down vest placed under the HH OCF pad. That is my HHSS record so far, but I know I could have gone lower.

I rigged an HH undercover + NASA blanket + 5-in-1 Jerry Chair to my WBBB several weeks back on an overnight hike with UncleMJM and son. Temps got to low 40s and I was just fine. Could have easily gone lower.

We left around 10ish and there was zero movement over in your area.
Bad form to wake a comfortably sleeping hanger.

I've got Scout campout on March 18-20, but the symmes creek/morgan sisters trip sounds tempting.

Kind of a newbie question here, but wouldn't it be easier to take the system down to lower temperatures just by beefing up your sleeping bag? I recently used an HH to well below freezing with no proper hammock insulation system at all, just a blue foamie pad and a warm sleeping bag. I imagine with a supershelter undercover/overcover instead of a pad I would have been roasting.

Yes it's definitely possible. I've got a -5 degree sleeping bag with over 6lbs of fill, but don't own a pack large enough to carry it. I've comfortably gone down to 13 degrees with only a thermorest pad and this heavy bag, but these are Scout campouts where the vehicles are nearby.

My $3 yard sale bag is rated at 20 degrees and fills almost half my GG Vapor Trail. It's the heaviest bag I can carry while backpacking.
