another use for a hammock

Went out for three days last weekend (Memorial Day) to Yosemite with some of my friends. One of them couldn't get Friday off so he hiked out the following Saturday to join.

We were in an established campground (backpacking) in a very heavily traveled region of the park (Hetch Hetchy) so I felt very leery of leaving my hammock up while we day hiked. You hear of gear being stolen in some of the Yosemite campgrounds. I took it all down, stuffed it into my pack and threw it in a friend's tent. One problem with the hammock gear, it's unique here, and I can just see it being a victim of one of the folks with HUGE packs - too easy to stuff into a small space and make off with it.

My friends were saying that the latecomer wouldn't be able to find us if I took down the hammock.... The tents were nothing out of the ordinary, two REI and one Eureka, and we didn't have a sign or anything.

We came back from our day outing, I set up the hammock, and then went to sit in the creek where the bugs weren't biting. The friend found my hammock while I was soaking my feet.

I think I'll start going National Forest soon.... I end up turning a little Vanna in busy campgrounds. "That's the shelf... yeah, it's comfortable.... please get out of my hammock, I want to sleep now...."

I had an old mayan woven style hammock that had seen better days (I wouldn't trust a human to occupy it safely) and when I moved I used it to lower down stuff from my second floor apt to ground level using a simply pulley system instead of taking the stairs. Not exactly as eye catching as your example, but it IS another use for a hammock.

If you have a side-entry hammock, it could be used as a field-expedient surgical table for doing first aid tasks (or surgery, assuming you're trained for that). Hard to sterilize, and otherwise imperfect, but potentially a lot more useful than just a sleeping pad on the ground.

I believe the HH site has an acount of a group carrying an injured party member out using his hammock. Portable stretcher in a pinch if you have enough people.

If you have to perform field surgery on me in my hammock just let me die and give my blood free hammock to the first ground dweller that wants it.

Also agree that the Banana Yellow Nylon my hammock is made from is a very useful Sign/ Flag of..."Hey here we are" when camping. Friends call it the Bammock.

You didnt happen to be camping in Tiltill Valley?

I was exploring Yosemite and a lot of Hetch Hetchy this time last year. :-)

We had lunch there. I wasnt hammocking at the time. We camped at TilTill, then went north to some lake and then west past Beehive meadow to camp on another lake. Saw a mountain lion just past the beehive meadow. Awesome area and we actually saw only a few other people. Be sure to visit the Evergreen Lodge for some great post hike food! I'm jealous that you actually live out there!
