it's for convenience and weight. the convenience of biners, without so much weight penalty.

My piece was easily made my hacksawing the line in the middle first then drilling holes centered on the cut line. Then some creative filing. I spend more time cleaning up so no one suspects anything in the morning. Some night I will get on the Milling maching then look out. Although I should buy some aluminuim, the shop is running out of 1/4" and 3/16".

When I put those biners in a stuff sack I have to swallow hard. Everything is so light and then there is this big piece of metal on the end. All just so I don't have to undo the buckle which is maybe 30 seconds of work. This was posted a long time ago but it is an idea that is worth revisiting. http://www.berkeleypoint.com/product...0215-0025.html
It could very easily be modifies to be a figure U or is that figure C. It's kind of pricey though and I take alot of pride in having DIY equipment.

The Camp nano biners are pretty small and light for rated biners... They're the same size and about the same weight as the ones I use to carry my car keys on, and that Coghlan's and other "camping suppliers" sell as accessory biners.
So they're much better than full size climbing biners.

But they're still 2-3 times as heavy as the things we're making. The berkley point buckles are going to be heavier still since they're steel or titanium.

So for the weight and bulk of one Camp biner you can have a set of hooks and a C (or U) buckle. All of the convenience, less weight.

I tried to keep as much material on the bottom of th "u" as possible since that is where it takes the stress.

I think I probably wouldn't put any kind of gate just because I think it isn't going to slip out. Although keeping the slot small is good insurance. If they made a biner that held my weight and only weighed 10 grams I would already have 4. So the point is weight not convienence.

Scott I was thinking if it still slips out of the strap loop you could put a few stitches in be hand real tight.
Why don't you add a sprung gate like a carabiner on that to add strength.

... oh yes, because carabiners are obsolete.

yes yes i know that webbing is to pretect the tree from rope burn.

maybe i'm missing something. but a sewn loop in the end of the webbing makes for an easy place to slip the other end through. atleast thats what i do.

Sew loop works fine, its just a bit slower and less convenient than passing the end around and clipping it.
