I have not done this myself as I'm allergic to down, but one of my in laws takes his geese to a game farm that cleans his geese and processes the down. He brought in like 110 geese (Canadians) and got back like 40 ounces of high loft down with his meat and it cost him about $70. Not sure if many game farms do this or not, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

This sounds like the way to go. You happen to know the name and location of this game farm?

Eider down is collected from usednests at the end of the chick rearing season. "farmers" have safe nest sites and even provide food for the wild ducks which return to the same nest sites annually. Google "eider down collection" for videos and pictures

When gathering feathers for tying fishing flies, I would briefly microwave them before storing them to kill off anything that would make them spoil. Though if you get enough for a DIY project you might struggle to fit them all in.

Down is actually picked by the goose from her own body. Then she makes a down-lined nest using the very best highest quality down. Then the down is gathered from the nests without bothering the birds. I read somewhere that the down harvesters take no more than 1/3.

Call me lazy, but after plucking a few chickens in my life, I'm buying mine ,clean and dry , in a nice piece of gear. That said,I applaud your no- waste effort.Seriously,my limited understanding is that down is cleaned and dried several times before grading.Seems like a daunting task for DIY.Your decision and good luck!

This is what happens when yea wash Feathers/Down.. TURNS into a MESS...

Darn Pillow Seam busted open. Oh the joy of cleaning that up... Shop Vac's are Gems!!!.. Good part, feathers were wet.. Did not go POOF when I opened up the washer.. Did snow some from the dryer. ;-)

Feathers, are the aerodynamic Shield for the Bird. The Down is fluffy and traps Air, that keeps bird warm. Many clothing has 75%feathers 25% down.. Or 50/50.. those darn quills poke..
