Arctic Sweden in February; Aurora hang, Abisko

This year sees me travelling to Sweden for the Jokkmokk winter market meet with the UK forum BushcraftUK, then heading north to Abisko and Lake Tornetrask to hopefully see the Northern lights. Solar maximum is due this Feb

11th-19th Feb is when I'll be there.

I'll be hammocking for 7 days in the freezer, exploring the area and generally spending a long time looking up.

A trip for those who are confident at sleeping out for extended periods in the cold parts of the world. The average temp at this time of year is around 0F/ -15 c.

Anyone with proper cold weather camping experience who fancies joining me for an epic trip?

    Pete.

Sounds awesome! If I had the Ł I would be in, but lets face it everyone is skint atm! Out of curiosity, what is the cost of the trip?

Yeah, that ought to prepare you somewhat for the trip!

Have a good time, I haven't been anywhere near that far up north myself being from the south, but it's bound to be crisp in the air, that's for sure!

I might be interested. Doesn't look like there will be a SKAHOw this year, and it's only a 700 km drive.

Hammocking up there might be difficult though. From what I remember it's mostly small bent birch trees. I'll bring my reindeer skin for ground work.

I might be interested aswell, should be easy enough to
grab a flight to Kiruna and take a bus to Abisko ^^

But not sure how im going to solve the gear in that case.
DonŽt think i want to travel with snow shoes so iŽll need
to aquire some good skiis and a pulk and so forth.

And that might get expensive! IŽll think about it atleast!

Great news guys I hoped the Skaho crew would see this.

Glad your keeping well Moski, sorry you can't make it. Good reasons though.

I'm taking ground dwelling and hammock gear, all hauled on a toboggan and on slowshoes. I'm in Sweden earlier-6th - 11th in Jokkmokk for the winter market and to have a little explore aqnd hang round there, maybe taking in Muddus or a bit of Sarek on the way up. Theres 6 of us already for that from BushcraftUK, some wildcamping in the area.

All is flexible ATM, open to some good suggestions.

As long as I get to gaze at the aurora from my hammock with a little campfire and frozen beard, all is good.

I would love to join you but I have a planned trip down to sunny Egypt at that time of year. So, while your freezing your asses off IŽll be down by the pool drinking Pina Coladas.

But IŽll try to be there in my mind!

I don't think you really meant that last sentence.

Have a great time in Egypt and drink some Pina Coladas for us
