Trip report, Stone Mountain State Park, NC

Took the afternoon Saturday, and went up to Stone Mountain State Park, NC for an overnighter. I decided to try to do a few little videos to test the water, so to speak (that's mighty COLD water). My upload to YouTube kept failing, and further attempts to put a movie up there failed. So enjoy the pictures and videos from Picasa instead, if you can.

It was fun to talk to the camera, although I wasn't aware that I had gained quite as much weight as I apparently have over the past year. .

I felt kindof like Tom Hanks speaking to Wilson.

I really enjoyed that Patrick, thanks for sharing. The detailed walkthrough of your setup was nice. How did your non-breathable hammock experiment work out that night?

I guess I'll see about adding Google Video as a host to the Video Directory. Maybe we can get it added there that way.

I cut my teeth on an winter backpacking trip there. 1st night was an ice storm & I was in a tube tent that took water/slush in the foot end were the top of the tube tent rode back on the line. Great learning experience<G>.

Looks like you had a great overnighter. Did you pack a fly rod by chance ?

Hey, well it was fun. Thanks.

I didn't pack a fly rod, but I hear that the fishing is great up and around there. Didn't see any 7" trout anywhere in the streams myself, but I looked...

It's a pretty park, I'll definitely go back very soon. Saw 5 deer while I was driving in, but of course didn't have my camera handy...

    Nice!

    Nice pics and videos.

Good idea not to announce your intentions so nobody interrupted your solitude like last time...

Really like the tarp. I doesn't seem to be cat cut or if so very shallow. I guess we'll see that in person at Mt. Rogers.

Ok, full disclosure... I had doubts about having the waterproof materials on the inside. So right before bed I moved that layer to the outside of my underquilt. It was a humid night, about 35F - 38F or so.

I woke up at 2:30am and stuck my hand in between the underquilt and the waterproof layer. LOTS of condensation. So I got up and pulled the setup apart, took a bandana and wiped up all the condensation off of the layers (underquilt is made with 1.9 DWR so not much water got in). Then I reversed course back to the setup in the video. I thought that I might end up sleeping in a puddle of sweat, but no. I got up late at 8:00am, and reached between and NO CONDENSATION.

I'm convinced now. Youngblood was right (again ).

You learned the right way, though! You took the advice to heart, and then proved it for yourself...

I was surprised that Brian didn't cat cut the sides, but it works really well as a winter tarp. Very big inside. Very nice.
