budget hanging kit?

I just ordered a grand trunk ultralight hammock and it didn't include a hanging kit. What's a good set up to hang my hammock? I was thinking of getting 2 x 10' climbing rope since it can serve as another purpose if needed. Basically, I'm looking for whatevers effective, affordable, and light weight. Thanks.

Climbing ropes are designed to stretch to help soften the brake in a fall. That's the opposite of what is desirable in a hammock suspension. Stretchy ropes will leave you in the ground by morning.

Amsteel is the most popular choice for hammock ropes and 100% polyester (not stretchy nylon) for the tree straps.

Many of the vendors here offer kits for suspension gear. (Cough) But as MAD said climbing gear is not made for the same use and intention as hammock gear.

I was planning on getting static climbing ropes. Are they still that stretchy? I really don't weight much and just thought the climbing ropes would be helpful in another situation. I'll look into your suggestions though. Thank you.

The Whoopies are for changing out the rope that is gathering the ends to make it more adjustable and it should have come with 2 hooks as well. You will need tree straps to go around the tree and then connect the Whoopies to or you can just hook what you have to it.

If you're more interested in shaving $ than oz then 1" wide tubular webbing (available lots of places for +/- $0.40/ft.) of sufficient length to wrap around your trees and attach to your hammock will work. I'm 315lbs (and decreasing) and it didn't stretch more than an inch or two over night when I was experimenting with it as an all-in-one suspension system. However, as several previous posters have stated, Amsteel Blue is currently the suspension material of choice for the DIYers and gram weenies, err... gear weight conscious forum members. Depending on the source, it's inexpensive (about $0.30/ft), has an insane strength to weight ratio, any stretch is negligible and it's laughably easy to work with.
