    UQ Fabric Choice

I am in the planning stages for a 2/3 down UQ.

I was originally going to make a Top Quilt, but I have decided to make an UQ, first, as I can use my sleeping bag as a quilt.

For the top quilt, I was planning to use Momentum 90 ripstop. I started to go ahead and use this fabric for the UQ, but I began wondering if I should use something more durable for an UQ. I assume that it will be subject to more moisture and dirt than a top quilt.

What fabric would you recommend or would Momentum 90 be a good choice?

I used 1.1 ripstop for my underquilt and Momentum90 for a top quilt. Momentum90 is really nice, soft and drapeable. I'd save it for the topquilt where it's going to be next to the skin sometimes.

As far as durability, I wouldn't worry about it for an underquilt. It's pretty tough fabric and has a DWR treatment. It doesn't weigh much less than 1.1 ripstop either. Actual weight is about 1.05 oz/sq.yd.

If money is no concern, use the Mom90 for both if you want. It's pretty pricey stuff, though.

I received some of the $3/yd silnylon from Noah Lamport. It is lighter then I was expecting for what I wanted to do, so now I'm wondering if an UQ might be a good use of this stuff?

I have read all the concerns about 'breathing' to avoid trapping moisture, but II've got this stuff now and am looking for something to make with it.

Since it doesn't breathe, silnylon would really be better for a tarp or pack cover.

    My 2 cents.

1.1 isn't 1.1 either, it's probably more like 1.3 oz actual weight. You're looking at a 15% weight difference or more for the fabric.

Very true. Also, every time I buy some it weighs a little different than the previous order. Must be variances in the DWR coating.

It's only like a 1/2 to 3/4 oz difference for the shells, but Momentum is much warmer.

I think my next DIY underquilt will have the hammock-side made from 1.1 oz sil and the outer shell from 1.1 oz DWR. Might be a bit warmer and it'll keep the UQ from absorbing my body moisture.

Wouldn't want both sides to be 1.1 oz or the quilt would take forever to loft, and forever to dry if any moisture did get inside.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. It looks like Momentum would be OK, but I think I am going to do a little more research into the breathable vs. non breathable fabrics before I decide.

Jeff, your site was one of the first that I came across and helped me realize that you could sleep in a hammock and stay warm.

When I first became interested in a camping hammock (7 or 8 years ago), it seemed that people were still trying to figure out that part. i am just now getting around to trying it myself.

That's a great idea Thanks - I have some other ripstop and lots of cattails. I feel a full length UQ in the future
