    Hammock stand. DIY?

This seems kind of ridiculous, but I need a little advice on building a hammock stand.

    http://www.brookstone.com/bs_assets/.../395491A_p.jpg

I'm thinking of building something like this and simply putting a screw in each end to guide the rope or tree hugger if that will work.

I'm not sure if this sort of thing has even been done or discussed (possible I guess), but my description is just a theory.

I already have some 2x4's and brackets are cheap. Stand looks very simple and I believe it would hold.

    What do you guys think?

I dunno if I'd trust 2x4s. with such a short sleeve at the base. Seems like they would just snap.

I'm with FF on this one. Rock really did a nice clone of the Warbonnet stand. It looks great AND it's portable!

I wouldn't trust single 2x4s either. The stand I made is not hard to put together. I think the 4x4s were about $8 each and the 2x4s were about $5 each (treated lumber for outside use) so the wood is only about $30-$35. The rest of the cost for me was the hardware I used. BTW, I also added a wheel to one end so that when you fold that side in, you can lift on the other and push it around like a wheelbarrow so one man can move it.

Alright, I'll follow your design then. How long is your stand?
    -thanks for the help guys

Are there no brackets (like in the picture) that hold 4x4's?

I bet there is something similar you can use if you look where they have deck materials - probably not exactly like that - but there are probably some corner bracket parts for pre-fab that would do the same thing.

    Hey aceatc,
The stand in your link probably works because it appears to be a laminate. If laminates are put together right they will be stronger than a solid piece of wood of the same dimensions.

Building the whole stand seems like to much of a hassle and reasonable storage space is also another thing.

So, I came up with another idea. I have a metal fence lining the boundary on one end of the property and it's about six feet or so where I could hang it. That should be high enough.

With the fence on one end the only thing I have to build is an opposite stand to hold the other end. Most likely something like this...

2x4s should work with this one though, because the strength of the stand comes from the rope and not the 2x4s.

So just get some good strong rope and plant two adjacent pieces of wood on one end...

    What do you guys think?

This idea looks good to me and would be useful when car camping but, would that peg or any peg for that matter hold into the ground well enough?
I would think there would be lots of strain on the peg and the rope leading down to it.
