An FYI on digital Camo. The US Army is abandoning its ACU pattern as they have determined it to be 100% effective no where, except maybe a gravel pit. They are calling the ACU design the 5 million dollar blunder. They are moving towards a digital pattern similar to the Canadian military Cadpat which uses more of a pixelated topographical map texture, adding depth to the pattern.

Really? Only 5 mil? I'd've figured that number'd be larger by an order of magnitude, minimum: we've produced a lot of uniforms over the last decade or so.

Anyway, not too surprised by this. The ACU pattern suffers from the same issue that plain khaki and light grey uniforms do: they reflect too much of their surroundings' shades. Which is great when viewed from an angle that gets the light from the ground...not so much the light from the sky. Meh...guess that's what a "one size fits all" pattern gets you. Still and all, it was the first pattern that the Army had that would help confuse night vision devices. So, I guess it could be considered a step forward there...

Big fan of the CADPAT, actually. Wish someone would make 1.1 to 1.9 oz nylon out of it... Suppose it's a good thing that nobody does. We just don't get enough dark green down here in FL for it to work well. Too much brown mixed in...and the plants don't need that much chlorophyll most places (outside of deep swamps) to actually photosynthesize the subtropical sun.

550 para-cord comes in all kinds of colors, and works great for most non-hanging-person applications in a single strand. If your life depends on it holding look elsewhere.

I find the "coyote brown" or whatever they call it that Hennessy uses almost invisible. I've actually struggled to find my hammock in the woods a couple of times coming back from getting water in the evening.

Anyone know how well spray paint adheres to silnylon?

Not well, by all accounts. But...I've also not tried it myself. If there's a silicone-based spray paint (wouldn't put it past our chemists...), that should adhere. Otherwise, well...one of the reasons that sil is so popular is that pretty much nothing sticks to silicone.

I suppose you could use blotches of colored silicone caulk or similar, but I'd think that'd add a considerable amount of weight to the tarp (might be better to haul along camo netting for those times that you're stealthing).

If you give it a try, let us know!
