I wish you and your son a marvelous trip, one he will cherish as an important childhood memory.

If you don't mind, how old is he? I have fantastic memories of my dad taking me to see ibex and marmots up in the mountains. We never slept outdoors though… and certainly not in a hammock, your son is a lucky one ;-)

As we are here to discuss list and weight, I would personally consider switching the heavy katadyn for "clean pills" (don't know the term in english, micropur and the sorts) and taking skewers instead of a grill, that is one kilogram less on your shoulders.

The pillows are a nice thing, but clothes in a stuff sack doesn't add weight.

You take three tarps? What do you use the heavy 805 one for? I have always find the HH Hex roomy enough to offer an important cover and let you cook or whatever even if the weather is ugly.

    Have fun ^__^

My Son is 10 - already been out in the back yard for a hang in the hennessey a few weeks back - and loves camping. probably gonna tent it this week with the whole family.

I've considered swapping the katadyn - but I got it a few years back and less than 20 litres have been filtered through it - wanna get some use from it

the 3rd heavy tarp is a cheap poly 8x10 I use it over fire pit to cover from rain - if the weather is not calling for rain - the tarp won't be in the pack.
It's a lot of weight - and will be a definite consideration if it's coming.
I could use the poncho(which is a poncho tarp) - but a spark hole in a $90 sil-tarp would not be fun.

As for pillows - I like having a dedicated pillow - only a few grams - but worth it

The grill will be used over the fire pit - for cooking - Definitely a little heavy - but but my son wants to cook steak over the fire

Actually this got me thinking a bit now - considering leaving the grill and just making a spit out of sticks 600grams less

also just took the extra adapters and bag out from the katadyn filter and its 94 grams less

Maybe a 7x10 sheet of painter's drop cloth plastic in place of the heavy tarp for over the fire?

Costs maybe $2, should hold the rain off the fire but survive as long as you hang it high enough and don't make the fire too big while it's over the fire...and weighs much less.

Just a thought. I've used contractor trash bags similarly to keep the rain off the fire until it got hot enough to ignore the rain.

My hammock buddy and me have adopted the skewers last summer for the times when we are in the mood for more elaborated meat cooking than just a sausage on a stick, but not willing to carry a heavy cooking set.

Throw your meat in your favorite marinade in a ziplock, let it absorb all the precious and succulent flavors while hiking. Then when you arrive at camp, make the brochette, kebab, satay or whatever you like, grill, et voilà.

Perfect fancy camping food, for the weight of a pair of ultra light skewers (that could even double as tarp peg…)

But your "pit out of stick" is now definitely on my to-do list for this summer :-)

We use the foil method for our first nights food. I found a link for some ideas but they aren't exactly what we cook. Here is the link. You can make some really good meals in foil. I love love love love meh some chicken/potatoes with the skin/carrots cooked on the coals for 12 minutes each side. Man its awesome.
