My 3 year old loves sleeping in a hammock. He sleeps in the hammock with me with absolutely no problems. I would have no problems with him sleeping in his own if I hung his from the same trees as mine and had him beside me. I have also left him in the hammock by himself when he sacked out early and I drank coffee, he stayed in by himself for around 3 hours with no problems. You just have to keep an eye on them and be careful.
Psalm 19:1-3 "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard."

I took him out last night and we had a lot of fun. However, he would not sleep in the hammock by himself. I guess I will have to have a few camp outs in the backyard to get him used to it.

I can see why HH may say a 12 year old just to cover their butt.
Bingo. Peoples south of the border and all over the world having been putting children in hammocks for eons.

How high up above the ground did you place your hammock? I am concerned I will not be able to lift him high enough to put him in his hammock.
In my mind, 2 inches off the ground is still off the ground. Of course I'm exaggerating, but I think with small children to help them feel comfortable in the hammock they should easily and comfortably be able to get in and out by themselves and not be so high off the ground that they are uncomfortable or get a height phobia.

That's what happened with Short Stuff. He laid in mine at first, then took a couple naps in it with me, then slept a couple nights in it with me and before I knew what happened, he was asking for his own for Christmas. He still loves it. I'm planning on making him a kid sized DIY when my skills are up to snuff, hopefully soon, and giving it to him for his birthday.
