Climashield or Climashield XP

I got a cheap homemade double layered Climashield underquilt and I would take it down to 30. It is heavy. It might weigh over two pounds.

This fall I built a single layer Climashield XP using the 5oz version. It is a 2/3 underquilt that is actually long enough that I am planning on using it as a summer top quilt since it will cover from my toes to the top of my shoulders. It will compress down to the size of a football, I am not sure of the weight since I don't have a decent scale.

I have not used it a lot this fall, due to work. However I have used it in the 25-30 range as an underquilt and was warm. I did have to put my sitpad under my butt one night when it got really cold, to keep the CBS at bay. In the morning I realized that I didn't have the end cinched properly and was getting a draft, so I may have not needed the pad if I had set it up correctly in the first place.

I think a synthetic quilt is perfect for a beginner DIYer to attempt first. They are really simple to construct and are a little more forgiving than down.

Well not including the channels on each side, its finished dimensions are 44'' w 60'' L. Then end channels add about another two inches to those dimensions.

Aha. Found my reference on drapability. It was the Thru-hiker site and was comparing XL to others(saying XL is less drapable). Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

I too have made mulitple Climashield TQ/UQs and I like them very much. Because I made them to fit MY needs, they are lighter and just as compressible as any down items I own (which is many).
- 40*F and up Summer UQ - 2.5oz/yd Climashield XP 36x51 ~ 7oz. I don't need a huge full size UQ for 3 season use. I supplement with a 3/8 ccf sit pad (3oz)that I carry...the 2 together have taken me to mid-30s
- 30*F and up TQ/UQ - 3.7oz/yd Climashield Combat 45x63 ~ 15oz. 30*F is pushing this weight for me, but weight/temp ratio on this quilt is very good.
- 20*F TQ/UQ - 5.0oz/yd Climashield XP 50x68 ~ 20oz. Very warm, but starts getting too bulky.

These temps are what works for me...
