Sand Ridge State Forest - My legs hurt

Did an overnighter at Sand Ridge State Forest. Can you say "shin splints?"

Glad to see you had a chance to get out. There is alot of the forest you have yet to experience, and yes, it is a beautiful park. Water is very limited and the sand runs deep. During the winter when the sand is frozen I think is the best time to go. Thanks for the report!

PS..my daughter and I are doing the Hennipen Canal this weekend from Bureau to Anniwan, about 30 miles, Friday, Sat, Sun.

fc53 - I went past the Hennepin Canal park in February when I hiked in Mautino. I hope to get back to Sand Ridge in the future.

Nice to see you out and about. Walking in that sand does make those calves and shins sing))))))
Looked like you had some good fun making the video.

    thanks for taking us along.

I saw in your Crown VC 60 video you go without the frame piece. How is that working out for you?
I need to give that a try - I'm typically carrying around 15lbs.

From hello, I knew I was going to enjoy your trip report! Sand isn’t much fun, it gives me blisters. One of thoughs HG tarps has got my name on it. I want a tarp that size, which has side pull outs. The Edge tarp, I’ve got, doesn't have side pull outs.

Hiking is for you! You were clearly having a great time and I was having a great time watching you having a great time! High and dry in the hammy, what a place to be!

Oh, it’s finished! I was really, really, really enjoying your trip report, Jcavenagh, it was greater than great. I’m going to watch some of your other videos.

TP- I find with pack weight of 20lbs or less that the Crown VC rides very comfortably. I wear it with the shoulder straps loose and the hip belt tight. That way almost all the weight rides on the hips. The VC suspension panel provides sufficient structure to transfer the weight down. I am really liking the pack. One thing, my standard torso length is exactly 20" so the pack is actually designed to, and does, fit me perfectly.

bh5 - Thanks. I am having a lot of fun. I have decided to post here only the vids that actually have hammock stuff in them. Like a lot folks here on the board, I am keeping track of the outdoor life in a broader fashion on the blog. I don't necessarily think folks here want to see all my non-hammock junk.

Shug - Thanks. It has been 2 months sitting in my office chair and I really needed to get out and loosen up a bit. My legs and feet are recovering much faster than I expected, so maybe I am actually getting into some sort of decent shape. I thought my knee would be screaming this week, but it has no issues. I am having a lot of fun with this project. I have been surprised many times at these state parks. Illinois actually has far more diversity than I originally anticipated!

The pine forest section of the park is a target rich environment for hammock sites. I will likely go back and hike the oak-hickory forest sometime to get a comparison.
