Alright Red! This has gone far enough!
Every time someone re-invents the hammock, I have to order more fabric from DIYGearSupply and try to duplicate it.
This vicious cycle just has to end!!!!

The pvc seems pretty robust at the moment, we'll see how she does over time.

(that way you can adjust the ridgeline up or down on the whoopie is needed. ) I thought your idea was pretty creative though! I was using a piece of wood for a spreader--I think the pvc idea is brilliant!
Thanks stevebo, I'm happy to hear someone has had a similar experience, and its not all just in my head.

Sorry Mike I know what you mean tho', this hammock keeps getting shorter and shorter as I keep modifying it.
    Good luck,

Picked up some PVC to try this today, less than $3. I had intended to give it a try Sunday but the river might be coming back up, so I might go play instead.

FYI each bar is three 2" pieces stuck into the couplers, with 1/4" holes drilled 1/2 inch from the ends. Let us know how it goes if you get to it.
    Good luck,

    Update

Tried a few different things. I think I found a way to get rid of the knots in the amsteel just above the spreader bar ( I just don't like the look of them) I'll report back in the am. Also tried to move the bar "up" away from the hammock about 2" and as I suspected the fabric has a greater tendency to bunch up toward the middle. I'll move the bar back down closer to the fabric and give it another try.
    Good luck,

Makes me wonder what our hammocks will look like ten years down the road! Will the perfect hammock ever get made?

Red, just curious if you tried it with a longer length, say 10" or 12"?

Nope, I haven't tried anything longer than 6". I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a more elegant solution, and lighter, more user friendly etc. and I've got nothing. I did sleep in the hammock with 6" bars 3 nights on the back porch and have no complaints of comfort.
    Good luck,

How 'bout making the end of the hammock U shaped (longer in the center) but then running the pvc through the channel and attaching the amsteel through holes near the end?
