I use a 5' piece of .024 wire from Home Depot to do all my splicing. First I tie it in a large loop and then pull it into a very very thin oval. One end gets pinched really tightly and threaded up thru whatever I am splicing. Once I have it threaded thru and the end that I am burying is pinched tightly, the other end of the loop goes around my foot. That way my splicing tool is held tight and vertical. Its much easier to then pull the line up and over the bury instead of vice-versa.

I was really excited when I went into Orchard Supply Hardware (OSH) and found some braided polyester mason line. Some was sticking out of the end of a package so I decided to see if I could do anything with it. No good. The "braid" was some convoluted 2-strand creature that almost seemed fused at each contact point.

I got some braided nylon line at HD the next day and practiced a few splices in it last night. Managed to get some decent looking locked brummel eye splices so far.

    tapering

Hi, all. Everyone talks about how important tapering is, but I'm unclear on exactly WHAT it is. Could someone explain? Thanks.

You pull out (unravel) several strands on the end of the single-braid cord that you are going to bury and cut them off. That makes the end of the bury slimmer (tapered). That tapered transition prevents there being an abrupt change in diameter on the splice, which would create a point of weakness.

The amount of taper needed is dependent on diameter of the cording being used.

    Thanks for the quick response!

As Stated, pull out 1/2 of the strands and cut them off...

Hey, HamMike, a question. I'm wondering how you get a continuous loop on 1.75 zing-it to "hold". I'm having no problem at all burying it using wire from an ethernet cord, but when I pull on the loop to test the buried end just slides right out. Also, what do you do to keep the "female" end from unraveling?

The Dynaglide has been measured by HF members as weighing 74g / 2.6 oz per 100 ft, not 2.4 oz.

I've used some thicker yarn needles to do it...I can pick them up at Wally world for under $2. I made whoopie guy lines, continual loops, and a few other things with 1.75 lash it. I also made a video that I will put up soon.

I use Opie's method and have never had a problem.
