    Hemmed Insultex Insert

After making a couple of thicker IX inserts with nylon and grosgrain binding, I decided to try hemming the three layers of a thinner one. All I did was cut to size, fold the three edges together twice and tape temporarily with masking tape, then stitch. It worked well; the result is light and has a pleasing feel.

This 30"x52" IX Insert weighs 9.8 oz. It is faced on one side with the last of my red nylon, and on the other with WM Digital Camo of Unknown Origin (nylon).

I'm going to make an UQ sized 45"x52" and see what kind of performance I get from two layers of IX.

EDIT: Added pix of the 45X52 IX Insert... just add suspension, and it's an UQ, the last thing I'll accomplish in 2009! It weighs 9.6 oz, because the grey nylon is lighter than the red nylon.

    Very Nice!

    I assume it's quite warm?

Question: Everybody seems to like using the 1.1 Silnylon... is there something bad about using polyethylene? Or urethane-coated 1.1oz nylon? There must be a reason everybody loves nylon so much...

I like the safety/stealth of your quilt!

added pics of the larger IX Insert, which will become an UQ when I add suspension.

Now I need a digital camo tarp!

Questions? As you make this into larger size, is there a chance IX will slide around inside or rumple up? Would it need a cross seam at mid point to stabilize the IX?

I made something similar with a layer of 4oz Primaloft between the two layers of IX. Silver on the outside and Black on the inside. - Very warm

The IX itslef is quilted, and I rolled all layers into the seam. It won't move.

Running Feather, how warm? Have you slept with it?

    Good job, Mac!

I assume the insert goes between a quilt and hammock? If so, using only one layer of nylon would save weight.

I made something (I'll post details and pics soon) like this and the one layer will work fine in most situations.
