Underquilt with a pad built in

So, here's a thing I've been turning over and over in me mind for the past few days.

My first proper DIY project was a PLUQ, and I folded it long ways instead of short for more full-body coverage. When I did that, I installed a zipper along one side to allow for the addition of more insulation (IE: stuffing a smallish sleeping bag in there or batting, etc.).

HOWEVER, I've realized that it's kinda the right size to slide a pad in to. What difference would adding a pad to the inside of an underquilt make, if any?

A big advantage of quilts is they pack down very small. CCF Pads are always bulky.

I'm not overly concerned about size right now...I've got other underquilts that I pack down, this would probably just be used in The Swamp (my workshop). The problem in there is that my space heater can't always keep up with the cold outside.

That seems like more work than just adding a pad, and I'm lazy.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Some sleeping bag/ pad manufacturers make a similar setup for sleeping on the ground where the pad is inside the bottom sleeve of the bag. Some of the condensation gurus might know something I don't but it seems like your just adding another layer of insulation to a system. If you're just using it around the house worst case scenario you grab your actual quilt? Sounds like it's time to take a nap... errr experiment... For science!

If you make that workshop hammock too comfortable you are going to have to change the name from workshop to Gresh's nap shack cause there ain't going be no work being done. haha
For an indoor UQ I'd just do a gathered end fleece UQ. If 1 layer is not warm enough double it. I'd stay away from IX or CCF or anything non breathable. The last thing I want to do is wakeup from a nap and have a sweatly back. my .02

I'm not sure why you would want to do this. The pad doesn't add that much insulation, and you remove one layer of PL from your "envelope" by inserting a pad.

I'd be much more inclined, especially since it's in your workshop, to put a nice wool blanket in there instead. A pad wouldn't add to my comfort.

Thanks for the insight. It's all hypothetical, since I'm sure just the PLUQ alone will be enough to knock what little chill there is in there off...it's all academic.

I've got a nice Batman fleece blanket that I'll take out there with me tonight and give it a whirl.
