    Boundary Waters Trip Planning Help

I plan on finishing grad school early this summer. As a post-graduation trip, I'm planning a trip to the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota (and possibly Quetico Provincial Park as well) with some family and friends. I'm trying to plan a 6-day, 5 night trip.

Can anyone lead me to a good website or other resource for planning the trip? I would especially appreciate it if someone could point me to some sort of route planner. There is some information on the website below, but not much about actual route planning. Thanks in advance.

    site mentioned above:

This site has alot of info on it.
Last year we went in on Kawishiwi Lake and paddled to Sawbill Lake. This would be a good trip for your time frame, but there are alot of other options.
We also did a loop at Sea Gull Lake but most of that area has been burnt. Good times though. Still plenty of places to hang.

The Sawbill website is also good. This is a nice entry from the Southeastern part of the park. The family that runs the outfitter (the Hansons) are super nice and can answer most of your questions. Nice campground for the night before entry. Hot showers available. Small store and all the equipment you might need for rental. At least 4 different routes out of Sawbill Lake. Have been going that way for the last 3 years. Can give you lots more information if you choose to go through that entry (PM me). Otherwise, if you plan to get up into the Quetico, plan early (from what I remember, Quetico entry permits are harder to obtain short notice) and you will likely need to go further up the Gunflint trail or North through Ely. Another good resource for lake information is the Mn DNR lake finder. Can print topo maps of the lakes for fishing purposes.

Thanks for the links, guys. Keep that good info coming! Optimally, I'd like to do a continual route (vs. a round trip) in a non-burnt area. I'll have to explore those sites (and more). I'll likely post some trip ideas once I have them. Thanks again!

    Hello Jofish,

    Another Madisonain here.

Are you going to Canoecopia next weekend?

There will be a ton of information, outfitters, independent speakers, maps, and books about all things canoeing, including the BWCA.

I must say my BWCA experience has been limited to the Gunflint area the past 3 years where I've gone with my (now 14 y/o) son who paddles his own kayak. For the 25+ yrs before that I have a secret spot in Canada I frequent.

PM me or get together for a beer if you have any questions.

Wow, thanks for letting me know about that! Awesome timing. I took a quick peak at the schedule. Looks great! I'll probably go on Friday and possibly for a little bit on Saturday or Sunday. PM me if you're going; I'll give you my number.

As far as beer goes, that sounds great. The more informed I am the better. And, of course, beer helps with that process

I'd also recommend Jason Zabokrtsky (Zah BORT skee) who runs http://www.borderlakesoutfitting.com/. I know Jason well and can recommend him for everything from dogsledding to canoeing. Contact him directly and tell him what you're after.

My vote goes to Voyageur Canoe Outfitters on the Gunflint Trail. http://canoeit.com/
We have used them for years. Mike and Sue Prom are great, and they require the same from their staff. The Gunflint area gets you good access to the border lakes so BW or Quetico are both viable options.
Mike has trip helps on the website, and MORE in his head. Give him a call, he is always willing to help you plan.
We do fishing basecamps in the BW and do quite well on the border lakes. Not crowded enough to disturb us.
The trees are drawing me near, I've got to find out why?
Those gentle voices I hear, explain it all with a sigh.
