    sportsmans guide tarp

    Regarding the Sportmans guide tarp

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=97247

After trying to get it set up was wondering how this tarp is oriented, because there are no tieouts in the midline so it can't easily be hung rectangular, only at a diagonal. Do you have to use a rigdgeline to get it rectangular? If so, how would you secure it on the ridgeline so that it doesnt slip?

You don't need to secure it to a ridgeline if hanging "square" just use the tie outs to make sure its even. But if you want an even hang you have to put it over something. or hang it offset so its longer on the windward side.

But it'll hang better over a hammock on the diagonal that's why its so popular (well that and price...)

I guess the last option would be to sew your own midline tie points.

Why would you want to hang it "square"? You'll only have 9' end to end and I bet your hammock is a bit longer than that, or really close. The extra 3' realized on the diagonal makes all the difference with this tarp.

    reason to hang square

I carry this tarp separate from the hammock, use it for temporary and emergency shelter while outdoors (canoeing, hiking, etc). I have not used it for the hammock yet.

For those uses use it like a hooch. Tie out the 4 corner then put a small rock in the center of the tarp and tie onto that to make a tarp tent above you in case of emergency.

I took all 5 loops off the center of the tarp, then used 2 of them to make tie outs for hanging "square" it works, but provides limited coverage because as stated above, my hammock is 8' long, at the center, the tarp is 8' 9", & actually, if you count the rope my hammock hangs on the ridgeline with, my hammock is actually 8' 8", so 1/2 " coverage (overhang) on each end with the 9by tarp.

I was going to order the 12 x 12 but for the past few days, it's not been on the web site. I'm going to call them today & see what's up. Very likely I'll be modifying it to something similar to a Maccat tarp, so when done it will be about 12' on the ridge & in the shape of a Maccat. I'll try to post pictures

I called last week and they said the 12x12 would probably not be available until sometime next year.

That would be great, well good, well, , , Ok I guess. At least better than what I was told:

I just got off the phone with them, & my phone order guy said: "It is listed as D or discontinued" when questioned further, he said "it would likely not be avalable ever" in his opinion.

I think I'll E-mil them. Perhaps all who want one should do the same &/or call them 1-800-888-3006. Item # WX2-76695 size 12' X 12'
