Angrysparrow, thanks for pointing that out. I had seen that once before but completely forgot how good a demo Grizz provided.

    obsession and madness

but we are all grasping and learning so this must be a good thing.
I just wish I'd known about this last week when I ordered the Amsteel for my rings.....so now I'm ordering a funky tool and more Amsteel albeit thicker....
BUT my backpacking BB is now 1 pound 9oz using the Amsteel/Ascender Rings and the tree hugger with one triangle per side SO
if I switch out to the woopie how much weight am I going to save?????
Yes each of us has a different priority in the hammock...for backpacking to me its weight versus convenience or replacing parts that wear out....for paddle camping I could probably use one of those Amazonian Jumbos!

Oh Man of Medicine...not quite sure what you've got on your Blackbird but I can tell you this. The lightest suspension you're going to find on the BB is the cord + webbing option that WBG ships (hmm, you can shave a little by getting a little lighter cord than what WBG ships). A simple cord, tied to that triangle with a slipped buntline...well look. That triangle weighs 0.2 oz. That cord is no longer than needed, and any other method will need more. You are within 0.2 oz of having the cord stick to the webbing by magic and no further assists.

What the whoopie sling and UCR give you is easier adjustability, but it comes with a higher weight price tag than the bare minimum. The point is that if minimizing weight is the objective, you're going to get that tying a knot.

    Griz, thanks as always

and that is what I thought--confirmation remedies the soul....well with that I think I'm going to be satisfied with the rings and Giarda hitch..a compromise between weight and speed.
Having said that I'm still going to play with a woopie simply to edify.
Forgot to mention that the slipped/loosed buntline hitch is in my inventory now!

I just got my Amsteel and made my whoopie slings, with a simple twist. I put gutted paracord over the Amsteel in the eye splice for abrasion resistance. It's just the right size. I melted the ends after I gutted it to keep them from fraying and just threaded it on with a size 5 crochet needle that I threaded the end of with a screw. I'll put pics up soon.

Great Idea. How did you do the eye splice. With the Locked Brummel or the straight bury?

This is all deja vu to me. About two years ago, Wesco (arborist equipment co.) sent me a catalog after I order some Zing-it. I came across their whoopie slings using 1/2 inch rope with an ungodly load limit at $70+ a piece. It did not dawn on me that a person could make one using smaller rope. I guess that is why I am not the head of Microsoft Altogether, an excellent and elegant advancement. Thanks to ZA206, Tee Dee, Grizz, Frawg, and SloBro. I am glad I waited to swap out my HH cordage.

The straight bury is stronger and easier, but you do have to stitch it to replace the function of the brummel. The Brummel and the stitching keep the bury from coming apart when not loaded and the bury provides the holding power. I have had a straight bury inch out under repeated load/unload cycles. So now I stitch the buried eye splice immediately.
