How much can you compress Climashield, Primaloft?

Anybody with a clima or prima quilt that has packed it small?

Working on a spreadsheet to compare synthetics with down for a different project. Need somebody with a, say 4' x 6' x 3" quilt, that has compressed it to fit in a stuff/compression sack that is, say 14" tall x 6" in diameter. whatever. Give me some numbers and I'll do the math and post a comparison.

For reference, my down quilt is: 48" x 70" x 3" = 10,080 cubic inches when all fluffed up. I can fit it into a stuff sack, with two 3/4" compression straps, and squeeze it down to basketball size (~10" sphere) ~ 524 cu in. This is a 95% reduction in volume. (eyeball estimate on basketball, will get real numbers before posting finals.)

Can anyone give me similar numbers for a synthetic quilt?

I have a 42X66X2 (5,544 cu in.) 5oz Climashield XP top quilt. I can compress it into 7.5X7.5X7 (393.75 cu in.) That is a 93% reduction in volume. I ever compress my quilts this much, I always stuff them into the bottom of my pack with everything else on top of them. I was amazed though to see the Climashield XP compress that much. A 2% difference between down and synthetic is really not that bad.

i can't give you much in the way of numbers but i have a ray way quilt w/ alpine upgrade & it's lost a noticeable amount of loft, & i don't think i went to great efforts to over compress it.
don't know what the starting thickness was but it seems to average about 1" of loft now.
probably had it a couple years & packed it less than a dozen times for trips, & stored it in a large bag.

hey sh, yoe might have done this already, but have you tried tossing it in the dryer, might bring back some loft.

I have wondered about the term "5oz climashield xp to quilt". Are you saying that the quilt only weighs 5 ounces and has 2 inches of loft? That seem impossible. I'm assuming the insolation weighs 5 ounces, but even that seem low.

LOL, synthetic insulation is measured by weight, not loft. The climashield weighs 5oz/sq. yard. There are different weights of Climashield as well (5oz, 3.7oz, 3.4oz, 2oz) The 5oz is rated to 20*F, and the 3.7 is rated to 30*F. People often want to compare down and synthetic with loft, but you can't, different synthetics have different insulative properties, that is why they are compared by weights. In the same since though, Climashield is a better insulator than Primaloft, so 5oz Climashield insulates better than 5oz Primaloft. That is why cheap wal-mart bags are big, but do not insulate well, they use cheaper synthetics. Down is completly different, it is still based on weight kind of, such as how many ounces of down, but then you get into the fill power side, where 500fp only insulates 500 cu. in./oz., and 900fp insulates 900 cu. in./oz. My quilt weighs 23oz. including the stuff sack. I hope this helps.
