Thread: Fire pit

Sounds like a good idea, as long as it's safe to stand on.

I would only use this as a survival technique. Hot coals, skin, and syl just don't mix. I had a very painful experience with a buried fire pit . JMHO

Just plan ahead.. while you're sitting around the fire. . . find a nice, clean, smooth rock and put it near the fire, turn it every now and then so it heats all the way through. It'll stay warm until morning!
Be very careful with rocks in fires - some have water inside the rock. It acts like a pressure cooker. The water boils and the pressure builds and the rocks explodes. Not a fun thing to happen. Don't know which kinds of rocks you have to be careful of or where you find them mostly.

It's mostly rocks that you find in river or lake that you have to worry about. Those are the ones that will have soaked up the water. Rocks are pourous so they can soak up water, but they pretty much have to be submerged for a long period of time to be a shrapnel danger. I like the idea of taking a hot rock to bed. This is a great thread.

    Yeah

Yeah, I mean you can't be stoooooooooooooooooopid.
You need to get a rock that's AWAY from any shoreline and that is dry.
I've been doing it for half a century and haven't had one explode yet.

I'm not sure that a firebed would do any good, even if you had a good enclosed winter tarp. I have used firebeds many times and they are great in a pinch, but I have also used wood burning stoves/heaters in Kirafu teepees and it takes a LOT of wood to stay comfortable (light clothing), and a considerable amount to cut the outside temp by 20 degrees. I just don't think a firebed would do it.

The firebed works so well because you are laying right on top og it, any dynamic airspace would rob the heat I think. Worth trying tho, I may keep this in my file and try it next time I am in the Colorado backcountry.

Old Bear Claw showed Jeremiah Johnson this technique. Jeremiah caught on fire in the middle of the night. To which a laughing Bear Claw commented "Yep, knew right off. Too many coals".

So, don't use too many coals, especially if you are sleeping on the ground! But, we would never do that anyway!
