I have read many posts concerning how everyone likes to store their tarps, hammocks, guys lines, extra cord etc....But my question is how does everyone store their stakes so as not to let them puncture holes in thier tarps, hammocks or bags.....

I've got a DIY "snakeskin" for my tarp. On the edge I sewed in a ripstop stake bag, with draw-string.

My skin is more a very long rectangular shape than a tube, and I fold it over at about 1 foot interval when I'm packing up. The stake bag is just tucked in between folds to stay out of the way.

I have a mesh tote that I use to carry all my hammocking gear. Ity doubles as a gear locker when the hammock is set up. The mesh bag has a zipper bag attached to it. Supposedly to pack away into its own pouch. But I put my stake bag in that zipper pouch. along with the various biners and other toys that go on the ridgeline.

I use a small stuff sack for the stakes that doesn't have a top closure, it is just a little taller than the stakes. It is made of heavier duty fabric and it isn't water proof. I don't want that one waterproof because it would be too difficult to dry out the inside of such a small stuff sack. That stuff sack is also to keep the stakes from piercing my tarp as I put it along the inside wall of the tarps stuff sack after I have stuffed my tarp. That way the tarp and the stakes are together.

I have a theory of what sometimes happens if you store you stakes separately from your tarp or tent. That same theory applies for tents that have separate rain covers. Obviously a lot of us have seen folks ready to set up their shelter and they forgot tent poles or stakes, but I was once on a trip where they packed two tent bodies and no rain fly. Of course it rained all night but the tent floor is waterproof and stopped some of the rain when pitched overhead. I think my buddies girlfriend joined another person that had room in their tent but he had to suffer the indignation of sleeping wet. If all worked out and was basically humorous but the funniest part is his girlfriend was responsible for the two tent body and no rain fly mixup. They did get married a few years later so it is just a funny story for them.

I have a small bag (slightly longer than a stake) that I got from Lowe's. It's rugged but doesn't weigh a lot. It holds my stakes, figure 9s, JRB suspension, and a few other small items.

My tarp stakes never come off the tarp. I stuff the tarp in the outside mesh pocket of my pack holding the stakes in one hand then I just carefully slide the stakes in last. The 2 stakes used for the BB get clipped to a biner attached to the pack and slide down into one of the side pockets. No extra bags, never any problems.

I'm with everyone else, I made a bag with draw string that is longer than my stakes, and they all get put in there, and then get put in the outer mesh pocket on my pack where my tarp is stored.

REI sell a bag for that purpose, CLICK HERE for $5.50. I just toss it in the kit I keep my hammock and tarp in.

I use a piece of tubular webbing a little longer than the Ti stakes. It also gets stored in the mesh pocket with my tarp.
