Hey guys, i got the UQ thing on lock, but i was wondering what kind of Top quilts do you guys use? Also do you guys prefer TQ's or sleeping bags, discuss the pros and cons of each. thanks!

Hey ikemouser ..... curious about that name!
I have used mainly my Western mountaineering bag and 0º REI bag in quilt mode and they work fine .... a real TQ will save you some weight though. I do have a winter TQ prototype made by WBGuy and it is rated to 0º or below. only used it once and the weather warmed but I loved the way it tucked around me. If you have a good bag it will do you .... then when all your other hammock items are in line get one.

Agree with Shug. A bag will suffice, but a topquilt is nice. Mostly just a matter of weight, well that and I don't like things with zippers in my hammocks. I can't see me ever buying another sleeping bag. I'd much rather spend my money on more down quilts.

right now i got the big anges pitchpine sl 40, its so light, like 15 oz. But it aint that warm.

I thru'd with a Marmot helium 15* 2 pounder. It did well and is still a good bag. Now I would loook into an old man rag by jrb, and switch it with a shannandoah for the mid atlantic states.

A Speer TopBlanket III (Normal Fill) has been working well for me.

Personally, I use a Speer Top Blanket III with 1oz overfill and pair it with my Speer SnugFit underquilt.

mine are all home made, some are down, some are climashield. Some have more down and is rated for winter, some are light and rated for summer. I've got sleeping bags but haven't used them since I made my very first quilt. My first camping trip (still in tents at this time) with my quilt, I still packed a sleeping bag. I was sort of scared that I would need it. Never did. Pros, quilt: lighter than a similarly rated sleeping bag, can be made to your size too, no zippers to get stuck. I haven't found any cons for a quilt. A big con for sleeping bags is that you sleep on top of the bottom side and you compress it so it doesn't do anything for you. I really like my quilts and for hammock camping, they shine.
