We're heading up to Carver's Gap today for a hike! I'll pack the snowshoes (also Yukon Charlie's) and we'll hike/snowshoe south to the shelter or north over the balds, depending on conditions.

Thanks so much for this TIMELY post!

Pips, Take your crampons too since you're headed over the balds. In that direction it is windswept on that side and in places it will be just ice by now. But I'm sure you will need the snow shoes where the wind doesn't blow so much. We had snow drifts in places where they were hip deep in the recesses.
Have fun and send a report!

Oh we had wind up there! And when I went out of the shelter once without my mittens my hands got painfully cold. So the wind chill was deff making the temp less than 32*!

Funny you mention the Applehouse shelter being closed. I was there a couple of months ago hiking in from 19 and had no idea what happened to it. I don't stay in shelters anyway but they are nice landmarks. Although I actually did sleep in the Roan High Knob shelter once in the 90's. Happy Hiking!
I was hiking with a Forest Service friend two years ago when we found a two foot high bong in that shelter. She said they had already decided to close that shelter because it had become such a party spot because it was so close to the road making it easy access foe the cooler carrying types, if you know what I mean.

I can't stay inside when it snows, I love walking in it and even paddling across the lake in it.

Oh yeah...That was a bobo....I didn't mean for all those clips to be published before I stitched them together...I'm still learning how to navigate around doing this stuff.
