    Taut-line hitch
    Once I learned how to tie that knot, I was using for all sorts of things outside of hiking.

    A Prussik is dead simple and very useful.

    If your using zing it or similar, knots don't hold well.

    I find some line types need a little tug to set the knot with taut line or prusik hitches. Once the coatings wear a bit they get easier to live with too. Using backing hitches is common with slippery synthetic lines-- an extra half hitch can make all the difference.

    easy to tie, grips better than a taught line, and can be finished with a slip knot. I use it now for my suspension line (no woopies).

    Ooh! I like that one too! Make it slippery and it's a keeper. I'll have to try that when I next setup my tarp.
