    DIY Tarp

Hey all looking to make a DYI Tarp about 12 X 10. Purchasing my material from Quest and would like to know about tie out reinforcement. On the ridge line and corners I am good with the triangle pieces but what i am not sure of is what to do to strengthen the ones along the outer edges. I want to make one with 5 tie outs along the length edge and need to know what to do with the center 3. Any help would be huge. I looked through a bunch of gallery pics but still cant get a good look at some of the better made ones.

I would do a semi-circle along the edges and quarter circle at the corners.

My side reinforcements are just rectangles not a whole lot bigger than the webbing tabs.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I've used three pull-out designs and can't tell any difference between them.

The easiest, if you use a taped hem, is to simply stitch the pull-out tapes directly to the hem tape. The hem tape spreads the load. This might not sound like a bombproof method, but it has never failed me. I use 5/8" polyester grossgrain for taped hems and pull-out loops.

Applied reinforcements work better if you use triangles with their weave aligned with the tarp fabric so the reinforcement and base fabric experience the same stress pattern. I use reinforcements of the same fabric as the tarp. It is prudent to truncate the apex of the triangle to avoid creating a stress point.

I sometimes use "outboard" reinforcements to spread pull along the hem - especially when using a rolled hem. An outboard reinforcement is simply a triangle of fabric with the weave aligned to the *bias* of the tarp fabric and stitched to the hem. The bias-cut triangles spread the pull along the hem. The pull-out is stitched to the apex of the outboard reinforcement. Big triangles can create the same effect as a catenary hem.

Here's the BlackCat tutorial, from Blackbishop351.

Really? I can see how they'll pull the edges tighter but won't they wrinkle the tarp at that point? If not, this is genius...much simpler construction to get a tight pitch! And even if it wrinkles some, it's still pretty cool...great addition to a first-time tarp project.

Is there any way you could show an example of what you're doing here (for the more VISUAL people)? Very interesting.
