Between the 9' and the 12', I'd choose the 12'. I have the 12' and like others have said, it is really versatile. It is a little heavy compared to the silnylon tarps, but much cheaper, especially if you find it on sale. I chose it for my first tarp because of that versatility. That said, I will probably add a smaller, lighter tarp this spring for use in nice weather.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

I have noticed that most photos of hammocks include a tarp. Is that for weather protection and or dew? I like to see the stars when sleeping out.

Second question. I am thinking about a tarp. The Kelty Noah looks like a good value. Which size would you get?

I have just received a WBBB and have a Green Mountain Double. Most of the use will be warmer weather but maybe a little rain.

I am there with you. I have been looking at the 9 as a tarp for the girlfriend. She likes to come to the group hangs and stuff, but won't go backpacking with me, so the 9 would be perfect for her, where weight isn't an issue.

Thanks for making this OP, this has been really helpful in helping me make my decision too Now I just have to find one for sale...hmmm.

    Latitude918,

Being that your girlfriend is going to a group hang the weight is not a concern and if she is anything like my Wife, she likes a little privacy while changing clothes ( she might not mind you seeing her in her unmentionables but might not like others seeing her in them ). A Noah 12 hung in the A frame configuration ( with doors or without depending on how it's staked ) would give her that over the 9 in the diamond configuration. Just some food for thought.

True. She won't go anywhere without bathroom though Lol (shes spoiled). She usually does her changing there, as the tent was always too short for her to stand up in (We camp in a Kelty Grand Mesa 2). Good point though

I have the Kelty 9, and I have a 12x12 Guide gear tarp, which should be family comparable to the Kelty 12. The 9 was my first tarp, still have it, but don't take it with me on trips. The 12 is my winter tarp, until my SF arrives.

Which to get? Either, for fair weather, I would go with the 9. Less weight, more open space. You can still close it up if bad weather happens to show, only need two stakes to set it up.

The 12 for winter, great coverage, you can fold the doors back to open it up more, if needed. Heavier, more stakes to hold it down, which could be good, or bad.......RR

I use a Kelty 9 (my first tarp) with my WBTravler in warmer months but the Superfly with my WWBB in colder months. Motorcycle camping weight is not a big issue so I prefer the two set ups.................
