PeaPod Thoughts - Looking for input on an idea

I don't own a PeaPod yet, but, after reading reviews posted it seems to be "the way to go"....

So, I have an idea, and wanted to run it by the experienced hangers here:

Has anyone with a Pea Pod tried taking a GORE Tex shell and laying it over the breathing hole on a PeaPod?? And figured out a reasonable way to attach the shell to the peapod so it won't blow away in windy conditions?

    Thanks!

I haven't tried it, but here's the deal on GT, and other "breathable" materials: "breathable" is best viewed as a continuum that is bookended by nothing on one end, and impermeability on the other. Yes, GT is breathable, but only in a limited way (imagine climbing a hill with a GT bag over your head), and I think condensation would be a significant problem.

I use Hilleberg Bivanorak in that manner for years in below zero temps.
With great results and it is also my rain gear.

As old gringo says you must have a breathing hole just as you must for your "peapod" or you will have condsition from your breath.

The reason I was wondering is that I have a gore shell - it wicks moisture very well - and according to all those graphics, it wicks moisture away and gets it out, while protecting from the elements.

Thanks for the bivanorak tip fourdog....So, you open that up and lay it over your top, or, just lay the whole thing over your top while hangin' out??

I use it like a pea pod, it protects me from wind and dew. It has a draw string bottom and is 96" long. It's one of my favrite pcs of kit. I Like things to be able to do more then one thing.

IIRC, GoreTex products pass about 2% of the moisture...making it "breathable." Personally, I'd use regular nylon or maybe DWR for what you're doing...much more breathable but would still trap some heat.

I found this solution - look at the PeaPod Hood here:

First - I do not own a pea pod.

I do use a Military Sleep System - which is a series of bags.

It comes with a bivvy with a full hood.

When its COLD I put the hood losely over my face. This keeps my face warm (rebreathing a small amount of the warmed, wetted air), stops me from dehydrating during the night and does not result in condensation since the gortex lets the moisture out (via both transpiration and the fact that it is loosely fit).

I've only tried this down to about 15F or so.

Note - I am not breathing into my own bag! I am breathing into a second "compartment" formed between the breathing hole and the bivvy hood.

Sounds similar to what you want to do though. Good idea.

    YMMV

Ive tried various extra weather protection with my PP. The best that has worked out for me is something like this... http://www.jacksrbetter.com/DriDucksPoncho.htm and a good 10X11 foot silnylon tarp. Set low to the ground this set up keeps me dry even with those foggy wet windy days.
