Since this is for where to buy stuff in Canada I will put a plug in. If anyone is interested in a bugnet in Canada I'm getting pretty good at it and have been selling locally here in Saskatchewan. PM me for details.

Great idea CanadaDan!
I eventually ended up at Redden after a month of e-mailing Samson and trying their different retailers in Canada. The Ontario ones wouldn't even return e-mails or phone calls. I ended up with several hundred feet of amsteel and the last 6 rolls of zing it that they had. If enough people show interest, they may carry it regularly. The price was unbelievably cheap even compared to the US suppliers.
Last fall I got an order from Feather Industries (5lbs of down for my deep winter quilts). Great company to deal with. If enough people could get together on a group order, it would be even better since you can order enough to skip the additional fees for under 5lbs.
I got a bit of a laugh seeing Gear Up on here. There's a reason I don't buy local when I can drive here in under 5 minutes.
Hennessey really should be added to the list, being the only Canadian source for hammocks, as well as one of the first retailers for camping hammocks.
There is no upper limit that I've found on USPS/Canada Post handled orders. I've had shipments come in that way that were well over $400.00 US with no brokerage or HST charged.
The problem arises when the shipper will ONLY use a courier service such as Fed-Ex. All the courier services use a border brokerage company to clear the shipments through AND they are HST registered so they collect the HST for the feds.
If a supplier can't or won't ship any other way than a courier service and I can't find an alternate source I end up having it shipped to a KinekPoint drop centre 6 hours from me. I combine parcel pick up with a weeks' camping in the hammock and a cross border shopping trip...win win situation.
There isn't an upper limit on dollar value if it's coming in USPS/Canada Post. I've had orders well over $400.00 US come with no brokerage or H
Yes you are right. There is no upper limit but I generally know to factor in the extra cost if placing an order over $100. If I get a way with it great. If not I know not to whine about it too much.
We don't have HST in Manitoba. Still on the PST/GST gig. I am registered for GST so I can at least claim that back.
I don't use companies that only ship by courier. Support your local post office!
Unless planning to take the trip anyway the cost of gas would be more than money saved on duty. Unfortunately I don't have enough spare time to take a camping trip each time I order some fabric or new gear!
Has anyone heard of kinek.com? It's basically a company that lets you ship to their buildings on the border, and you can pick it up for a nominal fee (generally around 5$, price increases with weight, and varies with location). I made an order recently, but have yet to pick it up (hopefully it's not a scam. I'll report back).
I use Kinek all the time. There's a Kinek point just over the bridge at the 1000 islands border crossing on Wellesley Island. Free sign up and 5 bucks / package. The guy takes CDN $ at par and they're really friendly. This one is run from a building supply center. It's a 1/2 hour drive for me plus $5 for the package plus $2.75 for the bridge. Still a great deal considering many items ship for free to US addresses, and it opens up our For Sale forum to Canadians used to seeing the dreaded "CONUS only" message. Also, with a US address Amazon.com is available and has way more selection and better prices than Amazon.ca.
A lotta ins... lotta outs... lotta what-have-you's
I used them once and would do so again in a heartbeat.
I had two orders I wanted to place where the suppliers would only ship by courier service so I ordered both at the same time and planned a weekend cross border camping/shopping trip...nice - 4 days in the Adirondacks, mega shopping AND cheap shipping charges.
I actually saved a bundle on the shipping charges. One parcel was going to be $90 to home, only $15 to the Kinekpoint and $5.00 charge from them for receiving it, holding it and handing it over to me. If all you're doing is driving across the border to pick up the parcel and then heading home it might not make as much sense since you won't have a duty-free claim allowance. Of course how much it costs you depends on how far you are from the border. Me, I'm a 5 1/2 hour drive to the closest crossing...sucks at time like that.
Kinekpoint emailed me when the parcel arrived at the pick-up point. I took a copy of the email with me. Took me less than 5 minutes to get my parcels from them
