How many (if any) have hung from factory racks on their car?

I did a lot of traveling (read-hanging) throughout CA this past year. Many times it was difficult to find two trees from which to hang. I only truly was stumped once in Joshua Tree. Many times I could have positioned my Honda Element close to a tree but I was leary of damaging my racks. Any opinions or experiences hanging one end from your racks?

The rack atop my Hundyai Santa Fe has a weight limit of 80 lbs so I wouldn't consider hanging from it. The trailer hitch on this vehicle was used by another hanger once - the vehicle was parked on a hill so the hitch was high enough.

I called the local dealer, who's a friend of mine, and he told me that he wouldn't put over 150 pounds on the factory or any other rack. So you'd be better off getting a class 2 hitch installed at U-Haul, and doing a hitch mount for those occasions. I had a class 2 installed on my Honda CRV for $330.

If you take along a couple of pieces of pipe/2x2/ski poles (my favorite), you can cross them and use them as a bipod at one end of your hammock. Tie the top of the bipod off to your bumper or trailer hitch.

Good point. Does the Element have an internal roll bar or cage?

I have a 73' VW bus that I hung from the part of the body that is between the sliding door and front passenger door to a tree. It was nice on a hot day but for the night I just slept in the bus's bed. I love my bus.

Dutch, the next time you hammock with your bus, please take a high-resolution picture for me. I drove nothing but air-cooled VW's for 15 years. Donut know why I am now driving a Honda. I miss my 1965 Bus with Sundial Camper option.
