Hello,
I am new guy here. haven't even posted in the introduction thread yet.
I wanted to toss in some information about the group camps at Uhwarrie. I've used them a couple of times with another group. Their are three sites to the camp. A, B and C. A and B are both set back into the woods just a bit. A is the best location - easy to car camp less than 100 yards - or less if they haven't closed off your ability to drive next to the pads. B is centrally located and better suited to using RV's. C is also in the woods but I've not used it. The vault toilets are cleaned out M-F and generally - if the group keeps it clean - they will be clean. A lot of folks bring a scented candle and just let it burn through the weekend. The same can be said for the shower house. They are hot showers. The shower house is centrally located to the B. The folks I camp with generally grab both A and B. It allows the RV's to set up and the tent folks to be away from the RV's.
The rangers in Uhwarrie are great. Some of the nicest folks to work with and very helpful. I used to a lot of trail work with them in the Off Road part of the forest.
A trail head for the Uhwarrie Trail is close by, although I've not hiked it. Another trail runs through the group camp. That one circles part of Badin Lake. There is a place called the Uhwarrie Outpost, it is run by the family of one of the former rangers in the forest. It's a great little store serving B'fast, Lunch and an early dinner. The also have everything from fishing to camping supplies.
It does not have the kind of elevation changes that western part of the state has, but if your in for it - gold panning is an option. It was the location of one the first gold strikes in America. There are some locations were the quartz that is usually found near gold is just on the surface. It is pretty cool area geologically speaking.
im in just let me know when if you can let me know like two weeks in advance for schedule purposes and ill be good
Thank you for taking the time to share this well thought out bit of information!
Welcome to the forum, now go introduce yourself!
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.
Uwharie is not far from me. Baden group site should be nice. I think I camped at A it was nicely wooded but it was while back. I have been to Yates place after hunting season it wasn't a bad place tons of trees. They have a pit toilet but no water. Ground Hog didnt you attend the hang in the Birkhead wilderness. It's part of Uwharie.
What we need is someone to take point. I have a bit much on my plate. I am up for anything. If its winter then I will NEED to get some new gear right. Maybe get my PLUQ DIY ( i know big spender I wish I could pull out a few hundred for some UQ or TQ).
When it comes to my normal cubmaster duties I have a camping trip on 10-26 thru 10-28 so that weekend is no good and then we don't camp again until the end of February( and that came with some bellyaching about the cold).
well lets shoot for first weekend in november and go with uwharrie
sounds like a plan. thats the 2, 3 and 4th right?

Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." — John Muir
