    Climashield Goodness Out Back...

Finished up my new topquilt this past weekend. Made it with 5 oz Climashield Apex from Thru Hiker with a 1.1 oz ripstop shell from DIY Gear Supply. Took about 5 hours for the build counting time spent making up a template that can be used again. Came out pretty nice I think...

Needless to say I couldn't wait to try it out. My oldest daughter Ashley and her friend Jared were home from school for spring break this week so me Ashley, Jared, Jared's younger brother Jonah and my youngest daughter Jenna decided to hang out in the woods behind the house last night. Had more hammocks in the backyard than we've had before and still have trees to spare...

Glad to say my Climashield top and under quilts kept me nice and warm down to 35 F. We're still working on cold weather gear for the rest of the gang but everyone stayed mostly warm and no one bailed to go inside until I rang the breakfast bell...

Great photo! I want to get a slide for my hammock setup, too. Good for those early morning quick exits ...

What a backyard!!! With a backyard like that you absolutely have to be a hammock hanger!Glad to hear the new kit did well for you. What are the weight and the dimensions on that TQ? Looks good.

+ 1 on weight & index dimensions.. How well does it pack down? The 5oz CS is on of the options I have been considering for a TQ.

Overall dimensions are 56 in x 78 in If I recall correctly (would have to check my notes which are at work) with a 14 inch footbox. Haven't weighed it or tried to stuff it down yet. Can't decide if I want separate stuff sacks for the top and underquilts or just stuff 'em both into one big sack.

I was pretty pleased with with it. At 35 I was comfortable. Not overly warm but not cool either and I wasn't wearing anything overly heavy - midweight thermal shirt and pants, heavy socks and a long sleeve t-shirt. I suspect with the addition of insulated booties, fleece pants and a fleece pullover I could have gone down another 10 degrees at least.

One rather amusing thing...one of the kids showed up with a 55 degree bag for his sleeping bag. The low for the night was forecast to be 38 and we're always a few degrees lower at our house. I had already planned to put him on a pad (he doesn't have a UQ yet) but when I saw the bag he had all I could say was 'dude, this ain't gonna work' and went into the basement to get him another sleeping bag to borrow for the night.

The climashield is sewn into the edge seams. I made the TQ and UQ more or less using the instructions that used to be on Arrowhead Equipment's webpage. I may add some quilting loops at come point but according to the info I've seen for the Climashield Apex they aren't necessarily necessary due to the scrim on the outer surfaces of the insulation.
