What do you do with your pegs?

I got most of my system figured out, Hammock goes with my quilts in the pack. Tarp with the ridge line in a small dry bag in the lid of my rucksack. But what to do with my stakes? Most of them are too long to go in with the tarp, they are really awkward when you don't have anything really ridgid in your pack.

What do you do with them?

I leave them at home. Seriously. I haven't carried tent stakes in years. I camp in all seasons and have learned I do not need them. Tie off to other things, use sticks if necessary.

It's great when you have time. But the last time I got to the camp site in heavy rain and it was getting dark fast I was very happy to have few stakes handy.
So if you carry them, where and how.

They have they're own bag and typically go in an outside pocket, if no pocket is avail. I lay the bag on it's side and just add it to the stack of stuff in my pack. I use shepherd hooks, and a lot of them ( I carry mine and my wife's) put them in hook side down and point side up so they don't poke thru the bag and haven't had any problems.
    Good luck,

What do you do with your pegs?

It depends upon the nature if the trip and the expected weather as to whether I carry stakes or improvise/make them in the field. When I do carry them, they are in their own stake bag in the side pocket on my pack.

I store my stakes in with my tarp.

I recently had one of the gear makers fab me up a couple of stake bags from the durable poly/cuben fabric that is being used for critter resistant food bags.

So far they seem to be exactly what I was hoping for to protect my tarp from punctures. Sort of a protective sheath, if you will.

Based on an idea from Paul at UGQ, I use a 'stake burrito' and put them in an outside pocket of my pack.

I really like Kayak Karl's idea of using a bandana and having a spare, though! Might have to start doing that!

I have a daddy caddy from member daddydaddy. Has all the groundhogs, extra line and a few continuous loops and such. I t keeps the dirt and debris localized and the gear easy to find. I keep it with the tarp outside of the main compartment. Have you considered smaller pegs, if yours will not fit in your top enclosure? You might even be able to shave some weight in the process.

For a small set of Ti stakes, I've doubled over a length of webbing and sewed the edges closed for a sheath; stored with the tarp.
For a set of mini-Groundhogs, I cut a used Tyvek postal envelope and made a sheath from that; packed with, or close to, the shelter.
    Both work great.
