Just an addition...No problems hanging at Unicoi last Thursday night. Campground host (not a ranger but...) came by and chatted a bit. As he was leaving he looks up and says "Don't think you're gong to need your tarp tonight." Best night's sleep I've had in weeks...
Was trailer camping up at Black Rock last month and ran into a forum member while I was walking the dog. Even tried out his wbbb.
So I know they let you hang.
Haven't read the whole thread... but once most people/rangers see your not harming the trees, and aren't way out of the so called camping area they are okay with it.

I called unicoi and asked about hangin', their answer was no, because tent has to be ON the tent pad and trees are off the tent pad so the answer must be no, we stayed elsewhere! The guy at Happy Hollow Campground called us the "Swingers" all weekend!
I have to say in addition to my last post, we stayed at Unicoi in a travel trailer and i put up a hammock for afternoon naps and not a word was said. So depends...
i never had a problem hanging at unicoi. don't understand how come some have....still preplexed

Have to agree with SoCal Mike about asking forgiveness .... and with his observation on talking to the powers that be first.
I was going into an area were fires were banned and only stoves allowed. I use a Sierra wood burning stove and wanted to make sure it was ok. So I contacted the rangers office, explained how the unit worked and sent them pictures just to be sure. I got the ok in advance via email. There was no problem but I am sure there would have been if I had not taken the time to deal with it before I got to the location.
As far as hanging from trees, give me a break. There has to be some common sense put into play here from the park people.

Nerstand Woods State Park in Minnesota. I was just camping there and was told in no uncertain terms that hanging a hammock was prohibited. The park ranger, a brash young man, said it was on the first page of the manual. I looked on the website and the information given at the park and found no such thing. He said it was state wide in all the parks. I camped in Itasca and Wild river state parks with no mention of this restriction. Stay away from Nerstand Woods near Northfield MN as it is not a friendly place especially to hammock users and campers.

This is all why I try and stay on backpacking trails. It really seems to vary depending who is behind that Park Ranger Badge.........
You just can't win them all but you can choose to go elsewhere.
