Attention! Fall MAHHA to relocate. No longer at BRC in Virginia.

Fall MAHHA to relocate! No longer at BRC in Virginia.

By mutual consent of the MAHHA organizers and the Blue Ride Center, it has been decided to move the Fall MAHHA out of the BRC. Both sides tried to make it work, but it was agreed the large size of our group would be detrimental to the primitive camping area that is usually closed to the public.

As people who love the outdoors, the MAHHA organizers believe in the conservation mission of the Blue Ridge Center and we are appreciative of the time and consideration they gave us in trying to make our event work. Especially AB Harris. I know you all will support this decision as well. And I'm glad the concerns were raised months in advance so as not to be a major hassle to people's travel plans.

Announcements will be made when a new hang site is found. We will still try to keep to the 3rd weekend in October, but it all depends on the availability of the new location.

Thanks for your continuing support of the Fall MAHHA through our growing pains! You all are the best!

As always thanks to all who put their efforts into organizing this event and keeping it running from year to year. I am sure it's no easy task to find a camp ground that can accommodate a group of hangers our size.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Understood. Will announcement on new location be made on this thread? Are there any ideas on where it may end up being held?

Thanks for all the hard work that is put into this event.

Yes, here, but also in a brand new thread so that it won't be easy to miss. Nothing ready to announce yet. Since we've gotten so big, we have to check more details than in the past.

I know it's a haul, but there's always Batona Camp in the NJ Pine Barrens - capacity 130, as I recall. Kayak Karl could probably grease the skids with the Wharton State Forest authorities. This site is also home to the NJ Winter Hang.

Thanks SS. I'll add it to the list of potential locations. Appreciate it. Mussleman also suggested Green Ridge State Park in Maryland.

I believe Green Ridge is state forest land which is more flexible on regulations than state parks. The campsites are fairly spread out though. I will brainstorm and ask around for ideas. Have you looked into any of the MD or VA state parks for group camping capabilities? Are we trying to keep this a "hike in" event still?

Thanks. We're looking for a place that can handle up to 100 hangers or more. A place that would welcome us. That means bathroom facilities for such a large group as ours like at Pine Grove Furnace. So it probably will not be hike in anymore. But being able to backpack for prehikes would be great. What I really like is having a covered pavilion if weather gets crappy for out potluck dinner and raffle on Satuday night. There are covered pavilions at Gathland and Pine Grove Furnace. Another necessity for a large group like ours. Plus parking. Not enough parking at Gathland. Just barely at Pine Grove Furnace.

lets hope the dates stay the same. Both of us have already gotten those days approved to be off from work. I really don't want to drive any further north esp to Pa or NJ
