Ripstop Nylon Tarp Question

I want to build my own tarp from ripstop or silnylon. Is there a tutorial on here that will give me the basics of doing this by hand? I don't have a machine and wouldn't know how to use one if I did so needle and thread is my only option. I'm looking for things like how much lap do I nee for a splice, how to attach tie out points etc.
