Any idea's on making a hammock with an integrated tarp/ my winter hammock

I am not a fan of integrated systems; if one part fails, the entire rig is out of service.

That is not necessarily true given that the hammocks I make are not based off a ridge line so if the tarp goes down then my hammock will still be fine. However if I did use a ridgeline based upon what you're saying the ridgeline would have to break to render itself useless, and if your ridgeline breaks I'd be questioning the construction of my hammock.

Would something like this work? I figure by having a strap with an offshoot for the hammock suspension to attach, both the hammock and tarp would drift down the same amount when loaded, and then tensioners at the bottom of the tarp would take up the slack. This could still be optionally detachable with carabiners, etc as well.

Thanks for the diagram that is really helpful. Hopefully I'll be able to test that out. However as meckelangelo is saying balancing out and dealing with the tension could/ will be a problem.

If you suspend your hammock from a heavy duty RL you will never be able to keep it parallel to the ground.
Your body weight will cause it to sag which will effect your tarp tension.
Also having a fixed height on your tarp means you can't raise it when weather permits.
I see no advantage in weight or function over seperate pieces of gear.

Why can't you hang your hammock as you normally would and simply attach some tensioners at the tarp ridgeline and attach directly to the hammock suspension and have tensioners at the ground tieouts for the tarp too?

In essence, this is exactly what Hennessey tarps do and it works for them.

As others have mentioned, there are shortcomings. It's probably never going to be as taut as a separate tarp and winds will flap the tarp around a bit; but it works for plenty of people that use the stock Hennessey setups.

I just got 3 yard of ripstop nylon and i want to integrate a tarp in. wondered if anyone had any idea's. I was thinking of installing a permanent web strap as a ridgeline but sew the strap into the tarp and then seal the seams. Has anyone else done this, if not please share any ideas or thought on my design.

What would be the advantage to such a design? I sure don't see it. Do you want the ability to pack a wet tarp with a dry hammock? Do you prefer sag in your tarp?
