I've seen sgt. rocks video and I choose the pattern below for superior strength. It's the pattern on all the fall restraint harness at work and proven to be stronger than bar tacks.

What are they called? If they're box stitches, aren't they at risk for unraveling quickly if they break anywhere?

I don't know what the stitch is called, I just prefer it to bar tacks. Getting in and out of a hammock is not that dynamic of a load, & the bulk of the time the straps are under a static load so a failure with almost any stitch pattern is unlikely.

You're welcome. My way is right for me, sgt rocks is right for him. There are a lot of ways to skin this cat and very few that actually wont work.

Bushwaker, i do occasionally use a bar tack to reinforce something and when I do I try yo do the 42 stitch mil-spec version. I may not always get the right amount of stitches but I replicate the pattern to the best of my ability.

Update: I ended up buying some of the Harbour Freight, but now that I have it don't want to use it - it's made in China, and even though it says that it has a weight limit ~1000lbs online, it warns that it shouldn't be trusted above ~300lbs.

Double check the ratings. Items often have two ratings listed. Minimum Breaking Strength (higher) and Safe Working Load (lower). We typically discuss the minimum breaking strength so you only see the higher numbers.
