    Bent Lamination Hammock Stand

Stumbled across this while checking in one of my other hobbies.

    http://www.woodmagazine.com/blogs/wo...hammock-stand/

Not really for a beginner, but I know some of you have the tools and skills to do this. This is a much more appealing design than the 2x4s and much better looking than my green metal tubing stand. I might be able to call this "furniture" or art and keep it in the house

If I were to do this, I would definitely do it differently.

My thoughts are: if you're going through the effort for bent laminations and forms to create something that is somewhat artistic, why bolt pieces together at the base?

You could just as easily (almost) use a brick layup pattern of short pieces and a band saw to make it one "continuous" piece like a bow front table. You could veneer all sides if you wanted to make it appear to be a continuous piece.

Another option would be to bent lam the curves into a brick layedup base to get rid of the bolts. You would have some grain direction challenges, but thin strips and veneer could fix that or leave it as part of the design element.

Oooooo.....skip the wood....foam core and carbon fiber!!!! Not as "pretty" but the cool factor (and cost) goes up a couple points.

With the right stain and sealer it would be a work of art... I hate paint and wood mixing, wood has too much character to cover with paint... Digging it just wish I had the shop to pull it off...

    Very nice...

    Would be beautiful indoors too.

I've seen a lot of 2x4's at Home Depot that had a curve like that...

If you could just find 4 that match. That stand would be a lot of work, but really pretty.

I'm thinking the joinery and foot design might need some tweaking too.

Steel fasteners aren't necessarily a bad thing for a structure of this size. With a little effort you should be able to diguise or hide them from view.

You'll want to 86 that idea about bandsawing the curve, it would introduce massive amounts of grain runnoff and almost immediate structural failure under the intended load. For this project the bandsaw is strictly a resaw tool for cutting thin bendable veneers while minimizing waste. Another option is to steam bend which allows for thicker pieces and a quicker build but takes more skill and practice and equipment. If you're looking for some really stunning ideas the archives at Fine Woodworking magazine have featured a few over the years that were incredible but they're typically pictoral and not how-to sorts of features.

The four bent pieces are identical. One form, all pieces cut the same, easily repeatable. Not a bad way to do it working in a garage shop. You can take it apart and move it easily too.
