New to Hammocks, interested in DIY

    Hello,
I found this place through BWCA.com forums. I'm a long time canoer and tenter. I am getting myself slowly set up for doing ultralight trips. I alway hear that once someone uses a hammock they don't go back to tenting. It looks like a fun option.

I've been browsing the DIY section and have found some nice hammocks I'd like to attempt. I also watched a few vids on youtube. I am planning to do a A-sym hammock design with bug net(probably velcro connection). I's still quite new at this and even though I've pieced together some necessary info to make one, I haven't found a dedicated thread to building one with a good materials list.

Here's what I've found so far:
If you have better materials, a better source, or a way to save money please clue me in!

    3-4 yds of 1.9oz ripstop
    -www.speerhammocks.com
used parachute from sportsmans guide another possibility?
Walmart material(are they OK or should I look elsewhere for higher quality?)

    whipping line
    -gutted paracord

    whoopie sling sus. line
-7/64 or 1/8" Samson amsteel blue dyneema single braid (????source????)
    Structural ridgeline

    -Samson 2.2mm Zing-it dyneema (???source??)

On the cheap is best for me, and local is better than ordering as I have to make my hammock within the next 2 weeks before the boundary waters trip. If you can steer me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Redden Marine offers a small discount for internet orders at their website here. Use the coupon/discount code "hammockforum". They are generally pretty speedy about order fulfillment so get your order in. The other alternative to Zing-it is "Lash-it". Both are great for tarp ridgeline and/or tarp tie-outs.

If you are using 7/64" or 1/8" Amsteel, you probably won't need to use any paracord sheathing. Both are sufficiently large that they won't cut your hammock fabric.

speers has lots materials that you can order in addition to the rs. On the other hand, if you have a fabric store nearby you should be able to get 1.9 rs their. I just got some green from JoAnn's and it made a fine hammock. (Be sure to locate a coupon 40-50% off).

I have used Walmart RS to make hammocks. It is often of inferior quality and stretched a lot. On the other hand, it works. If you are not too heavy you might want to try it. On the other hand if you are going to put a lot of time into building the hammock then get better material.

If you only have two weeks you might want to think about buying a cheap hammock, or making a simple design. Just Jeff has a nice tutorial on building a basic hammock at his site - no frills, but easy to make. A good way to get started.

BTW - an attached bug net can be challenging to make. Unless you are experienced in DIY you might want to go with one of the other bug net ideas.

    Welcome to the forums!

My DIY hammock is made from Hancock's fabric store ripstop, which is 1.9 oz weight I believe. Has held up very well for several years with no fabric failure. If you've got one local or a JoAnn's, that's a quick option.

    Good luck and have fun!
