You could start off with a HH Expedition model hammock (zip or not) available at your local REI. That will take care of 4 of the items on your list.
There was a thread in the DIY section about a Boy Scout hammock setup that was made for very little money.
As for a backpack, just be sure to get one that fits properly and is comfortable to wear. For a stove, you could do the DIY bushbuddy solution with a 1 quart paint can and a soup can. There are videos and pictures on youtube and here. If you are in the alcohol stove category, it is hard to beat the offerings from MiniBull Designs or the offerings from StovemanDan.

One thing that I might add is, what is his use/purpose going to be for all this gear?
I have gone through many different cook set's, hammocks, ect... to get where I am now of having things pretty much where "I" want them to be (with minor tweaks of course cause I am a gear addict)!
What I am getting at is what does he plan to do ie.. car camp, hike in/out kind of deal, section hike's (short distance), long distance hike's, is he looking to go lightweight, or ultralightweight, or does weight not even matter?
Is he going to cook for just himself, or him + significant other, does he want to use a open fire for cooking sometimes, or something like a Heineken can cook system?
I'll stop here as I think you get the idea we all can make suggestions as what to get, but you might get some more descriptive ideas if we have something more to go off of!

Also, stoves are very easy to make if you have a dremel and a little time.
As for everything else, I agree with the shopping around the HF vendors comments. Alot of options out there. Hope this helped
